'Anora' Wins Best Original Screenplay at WGA Awards

Director Sean Baker received the Best Original Screenplay award for 'Anora' at the WGA Awards in Los Angeles. The ceremony also honored other films and series this month.


American director Sean Baker was awarded the best original screenplay prize for his film 'Anora' at the 77th edition of the awards organized by the Writers Guild of America (WGA). The ceremony took place in Los Angeles and New York, where filmmakers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes were also honored for best adapted screenplay with 'Nickel Boys'.

'Anora', which tells the story of a sex worker who marries a young Russian oligarch, is shaping up to be one of the favorites at the upcoming Academy Awards. The film has already been recognized by Hollywood's director and producer guilds, thus solidifying its path toward the industry's most coveted awards.

At the same ceremony, the 17th-century Japanese drama 'Shogun' from the FX platform was awarded best drama series and new production. Meanwhile, HBO Max's 'Hacks' won the award for best comedy series, and HBO Max's 'The Penguin' was recognized as the best limited series or miniseries.

Regarding episodes, 'Anjin' from the 'Shogun' series won best drama episode, while 'Bulletproof' from 'Hacks' was awarded best comedy episode. The WGA gala recognized the highlights of cinema, television, radio, and digital media in the field of writing, emphasizing the quality and creativity of the awarded screenwriters.
